It’s a Character Thing
One of the best parts of homeschooling is being able to have a hands on approach to what your children are learning! I do think that it is a homeschooling parent’s obligation to be devoted to that, which seems obvious, but there is a reason that homeschooling is sometimes met with criticism… and that is because people sometimes meet a parent that wasn’t diligent in that area, and then assume all homeschooling parents are the same.
We aren’t… but I digress.
One of the things I wanted my children to learn, was and is, character. Character can be learned by observation but I chose to use a little bit of curriculum as well. We used a company called Character First Education (not an affiliate link). They have, at the time of this post, 30 different character qualities and offer booklets, posters, trading cards, and more.
Our first quality was Honesty. I forgot to mention above that each quality is attached to an animal. The booklet and other materials show examples of how that animal shows that particular character quality. Honesty is attached to Lions, because lions never lie… when they are mad, they show it and their body language always shows the truth.
The booklets also have games and other stories with them and include a person of history that also showcases the character quality. The Honesty booklet talked about Abraham Lincoln and how he was known as “Honest Abe”. The booklets give opportunities for parents to tie in learning about the attached animal and person in history, which makes them even more valuable, in my opinion!
One of the best bits in the poems that go along with the quality. You can access them on their website BUT you can also see my kiddos doing the Honesty Poem below. It’s a great way to get the message home!
To The Future
I plan on doing them all… I think a parent could take the booklets and just use the best parts, doing one character quality a week OR take their time and do one quality a month. We chose the latter and it has really worked for us.
Bet + Fam 🙂
